Competitions, clinics, concerts and more, the 51st annual Eau Claire Jazz Festival is sure to take the city by storm from April 21 – 22! The festival kicks off on Friday, April 21 with student competitions happening across the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus. Guest artist headliner concerts, the 52nd Street celebration and many other performances and festivities will be following the competition to ensure a jazz-filled weekend for all festivalgoers. Guest artists Doc Severinsen and Carl Allen will be playing alongside the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Jazz Ensemble I at the State Theatre during both nights of the festival.

Josh Becker

Dr. Joshua Becker is a Twin Cities-based educator and trombonist. He teaches band and orchestra at Eagle Ridge Middle School in Savage, MN and directs the brass choir at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Burnsville. He also maintains a large low brass studio of middle high school musicians.

Dr. Becker holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree and Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music, where he was a teaching assistant in the Music Education and Trombone departments. He received a Master of Music degree from Rice University's Shepherd School of Music and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. His teachers include Phillip Freeman, David Kirk, Dr. John Marcellus, Dr. Phil Ostrander, John Rojak, the late David Waters, and Larry Zalkind.

Dr. Becker has performed with the Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet, Rochester Philharmonic, Chautauqua Symphony, Eastman Wind Ensemble and the Aspen Festival Orchestra. He served as bass trombonist for the Rochester Philharmonic's summer season in 2014 and toured the United States with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra in 2009. Dr. Becker was a 3-year scholarship student at the Aspen Music Festival, was a finalist for the International Trombone Association's Edward Kleinhammer Competition, the Eastern Trombone Workshop's Division III Solo Competition, and was a semi-finalist and finalist for auditions with the U.S. Air Force “Airmen of Note” and U.S. Army Field Band “Jazz Ambassadors,” respectively.
